Gasa
Gasa the northern most district of the country has the smallest population. The entire district falls under the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park. This starkly beautiful region with elevations ranging from 1500 to 4,500 metres experiences extremely long and hard winters and short but beautiful summers.
Of culture meet the people of Laya, the nomads of western Bhutan. These people live on yaks and harvest of Cordycep (fungi of high value, used in oriental medicine). The district is famous for having many hot springs and medicinal baths.
- Gasa Dzong
Locally known as the Tashi Thongmon Dzong, the fortress served as a defending barrack in the 17th century. The fortress is unique with a circular shape and three watch towers that are placed at strategic points. The beauty of the dzong is heightened during clear days with view of Mt. Gangboom.
- Laya Village
Laya village is located at an altitude of 3800 m above sea level. About three night trek will take you to the beautiful untouched village. One can witness beautiful snow capped Himalayas, alpine grassland, wide green pastures, meadow with different varieties of blossoms and numerous passes. One can also experience culture and traditions which has been surviving for so long in the north of this small country Bhutan.
- Lunana Village
Lunana is the most remote village of Gasa District. In this village, one can witness and experience the life of nomads residing amongst the glaciers and snows. The nomads in this village make their living and earns from Yak, Sheep and cordycep harvesting.
- Sacred Places
Some of the well-known sacred religious monuments in Gasa includes, Zabsel and Phulukha choetens, Throe Lhakhang, Dung Goemba, Drophel Choling, Yonzho Lhakhang, Jangchub Choling, Bumpa lhakhang, and the ruins of the ancestral home of the 1st Deb Raja of Bhutan, Tenzin Drugyel.
- Hot Springs
Gasa Hot Spring known as Gasa Tshachu, is one of the famous national heritage, which draws Bhutanese from all over the country and tourists too. The hot spring has medical properties; it has provided hope to countless patients. It is known that, many of the diseases can be healed if we take a hot dip in it.
- Nature Trip
The natural vegetation of Gasa District falls under the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park. It has god beautiful landscape covered by hills, snow capped mountains, rocks and green vegetation. There are over hundreds of glacial lakes. It has got some rare flora and fauna species and is a home for the elusive snow leopard, Takin – the national animal, Red Panda, the mountain goats, Blue sheep and the Blue Poppy, the national flower of the country.
